Tommy Coyle will 'turn back clock' to fight again

Former Commonwealth lightweight champion Tommy Coyle will make his return to the ring to help raise money for charity.

Coyle, from Hull, hung up his gloves more than five years ago, but is set to box again against former opponent Derry Mathews to benefit boxing clubs in the city and Liverpool.

The 37-year-old said: “The response has been incredible. It’s been humbling and I’m excited, but I’m a little bit nervous as well.”

The fight is set to take place on 11 December at a venue, which is yet to be confirmed, in Hull.

Coyle and Mathews first battled for the Commonwealth title at Craven Park, Hull, in 2013. Mathews won in the 10th round.

Coyle said: “Who knows what’s going to happen? In round 10, I got knocked out, so let’s just see if I can turn back the clock.

“We’re two old pros that are friends and we’re going to go at it and try and create some memories.”

Discussing his comeback, Coyle also reflected on the loss of his father Chris who died in 2022. He had been a “huge part” of his career.

“It will be the first fight my dad’s not seen,” said Coyle.

“It’s sad, but I can’t not do things just because he’s not around anymore. He isn’t coming back and I’ve had to learn to come to terms with that.

“I’ve really struggled with him not being around, he was my best friend.

“For the next 12 weeks, it will give me something to focus on, something to chase, and something to occupy my mind. If I say I’m doing something, I always do it.”

Coyle added: “Boxing fans will be the winners in this fight as well as the clubs we’re raising money for.”
