Trent Grisham is going on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring, the New York Yankees announced on Saturday.

Grisham, 29, sustained the injury while running the bases during Friday’s 8-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. In the sixth inning, he hit a two-run single but appeared to hurt himself while trying for second base. Grisham got to second and was ruled safe after a replay, but came out of the game for Max Schuemann.

Following the game, Grisham and the Yankees were optimistic that the injury might not be serious. Whether or not Grisham underwent an imaging exam wasn’t reported, but evaluation obviously deemed a stint on the IL necessary.

Grisham has a slash line of .232/.341/.406 in 264 plate appearances. But his bat came alive in May (.263/.355/.442) after a slow April and has been even more effective in June, batting .361 with a .964 OPS.

Jasson Domínguez was activated from the IL, finishing his minor-league rehab assignment, to take Grisham’s spot on the Yankees’ roster. He will likely play right field with Grisham and Aaron Judge sidelined. However, Domínguez hasn’t played that position in the majors and only appeared there four times in the minors.

Moving Cody Bellinger from left field, where he’s been outstanding defensively (15 Defensive Runs Saved, 3 Outs Above Average), isn’t a viable option. So for now, the Yankees’ regular outfield will likely be Bellinger in left, Spencer Jones in center (where he’s played most of his career) and Domínguez in right.

Domínguez posted a .318/.400/.500 slash average with 5 home runs, 18 RBI and 10 stolen bases at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, which included five games of his rehab assignment.

The original plan was for him to play through the weekend in the minors before having his sprained left shoulder re-evaluated. But Grisham’s injury created urgency to add Domínguez to the roster now.

The Yankees go into Saturday’s matchup with Toronto virtually tied for first place in the AL East at 41-27, percentage points behind the Tampa Bay Rays (40-26).
