Xabi Alonso avoided discussing his Bayer Leverkusen future ahead of their Bundesliga clash against Bochum on Friday night. The Spaniard has a contract until 2026, and earlier reports suggested that the Spaniard could have announced a decision on his Bayer future in Thursday’s press conference. But that wasn’t the case.

With Alonso’s future still open, the 43-year-old avoided committing to the Werkself beyond the summer, saying: “I’m staying focused this season. We’re in an important phase and don’t want to speculate. We don’t want to think about anything other than football.”

A busy summer for Bayer Leverkusen regardless of Xabi Alonso’s future

Appointed as Bayer Leverkusen head coach in October 2022, Xabi Alonso’s record at the BayArena is nothing short of exceptional. Although six points behind leaders Bayern Munich, Bayer have lost just two of their 26 Bundesliga games this season.

The reigning champions, who won the Bundesliga for the first time in their history under the Spaniard, are expected to undergo a big summer overhaul. Up to nine players, including Jeremie Frimpong and Victor Boniface, could leave Bayer in the summer, giving the club a healthy transfer budget heading into the 2025/26 season.

Whether Alonso is a part of that is yet to be decided.
