Gulliksen, Capps go on front-nine tear in final round at Black Diamond to win by four shots

  • Tyler Gulliksen and Ty Capps won their fourth Florida State Golf Association team event.
  • Beachside High School’s golf team won the Randy Warren Invitational, defeating rival Ponte Vedra.
  • Ponte Vedra sophomore Jude Johnson won the individual title at the Randy Warren Invitational.

The team of University of North Florida assistant men’s golf coach Tyler Gulliksen of Flagler Beach and Ty Capps of Palm Coast continues to be tough to beat.

Gulliksen and Capps won their fourth Florida State Golf Association team event Sept. 6-7 at the Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto when they pulled away from a three-way tie after the first round to win the FSGA Mid-Amateur Four-Ball North championship by four shots at 17-under-par 127.

Hunter Spitler of Bradenton and Brad Knight of Sarasota, and John Valenty of Seminole, and Trey Hill of St. Petersburg tied for second at 13-under.

Gulliksen and Capps previously won FSGA Two-Man Shootout titles in 2023 and 2024, and won the FSGA Four-Ball in 2024.

After an opening-round 64, the winning team pulled ahead when Capps birdied Nos. 3 and 5 and Gulliksen birdied No. 6, then eagled the par-5 ninth.

They didn’t make a bogey on their way to a second-round 63.

Len Schonfeld of Jacksonville and Joel Durrance of Orlando (68-68) and Patrick Beste of Ponte Vedra Beach and Ronald Ryan of Naples (69-67) tied for 12th at 8-under. Billy Lodise of St. Augustine and Bart Abstein of St. Johnson (71-66) tied for 15th.

Beachside tops Ponte Vedra in Randy Warren Invitational

The Beachside vs. Ponte Vedra rivalry in boys golf added another chapter on Sept. 8 at the Randy Warren Invitational, and Beachside got the best of it at the Golf Club of Fleming Island.

But Ponte Vedra unveiled another budding star in sophomore Jude Johnson.

Johnson birdied five of his first 11 holes and won the individual title with a 5-under 66. He topped Beachside’s Jonah Nacional by two shots and teammate Cooper Franklin and Providence’s Alexander Stewart by three.

But Beachside’s depth delivered the team title at even-par 284. Jaspreet Kondal posted a 70, Jaden Nacional 72 and Samuel Ha 74. The Barracudas were three shots clear of the Sharks, with Providence coming in third at 14-over.

Kondal had only one bogey and Jonah Nacional birdied three of his last five holes.

Wolfson benefit is a big hit

The first San Jose Scramble, which was organized by the children of San Jose Country Club director of golf Todd Bork to benefit the Wolfson Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, drew 20 four-player teams for its Sept. 8 playing.

The winning team, under a net scramble format with a 25-under par 47, was Stephen Vining, Dudley Mendheim, Dennis Siegmann and Gino Gonzalez. Second at 24-under were Michael Bush, Robert Murray, Brian Hennessey and Ryan Walker.

Jordan, Jackson and Joshua Bork, who are Middleburg High students, organized the charity tournament. Jackson and Joshua Brok were born at 28 weeks old in 2008 and had to stay for 90 days in the Wolfson NICU.

Spencer Schindler playing in U.S. Mid-Am

Former Menendez High and Flagler College player Spencer Schindler is in the field this week at the U.S. Mid-Amateur at the Troon Country Club and Troon North in Scottsdale.

Schindler earned his spot by winning a qualifier at the Soldier Hollow Golf Club in Midway, Utah, on Aug. 18 with a 66. Schindler birdied five of his first seven holes in that round.
