Tommy DeVito became something of an Internet sensation during the 2023 season, winning three of his six starts while earning the nickname “Tommy Cutlets” based on his New Jersey roots.

He was eventual benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor, and spent much of the 2024 season as the third-stringer behind Daniel Jones and Drew Lock. But with the Giants benching Jones amid a 2-8 start, likely to avoid his injury guarantees, DeVito was thrust into the starting role once again and isn’t focused on any of the Tommy Cutlets’ business this time around.

“Last year was a good story and all, how it happened,” he told reporters Wednesday. “All the fun and games outside, it was fun. That was last year. I’m sticking to football now. Not that I wasn’t before. The external stuff will be on pause. I already had talks with everybody around me, my inner circle. Want it to stay very tight and make sure that everything is about production on Sunday.”

The Giants benching Daniel Jones for Tommy Cutlets is the finest execution of tanking ever.
✅Cynically protect yourself from guaranteeing Jones’ contract for injury
✅Pick the QB most likely to lose for better draft position
✅Keep fans engaged with Cutlets memes.

Giants coach Brian Daboll says on a conference call that Tommy DeVito will start AND Drew Lock will be his backup. Again, that puts the team in a place where it won’t have to play Daniel Jones, and risk his $23 million injury guarantee.

In nine total appearances last year, DeVito threw for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions, completing 64 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 195 yards, a touchdown and one lost fumble.

The Giants will almost assuredly draft a young quarterback at this year’s NFL draft. If DeVito has a strong showing down the stretch, however, he could at least make a strong argument for being a bridge starter in 2025 while the Giants groom their quarterback of the future.
