When is the Times Square boxing fight?

Coverage of the Times Square boxing fight begins at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, May 2.

Why is there a fight in Times Square?

The fights were largely the idea of Saudi boxing guru Turki Alalshikh.

Alalshikh and Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority have often looked to place fights in non-traditional venues that would catch the viewers’ eyes. As such, Times Square was the decided-upon venue after the idea of Alcatraz was also considered.

Why are there no tickets to Times Square boxing fights?

The Times Square boxing fights are invite-only, with a small, VIP crowd of around 300 spectators ringside.

That said, DAZN has reported that screens will be built outside the fight venue. Those screens will allow fans and pedestrians in Times Square to watch the event without paying.

How the Times Square boxing ring got built

The ring was built at the most central part of Times Square, or “Right where the ball drops, the crossroads of the world,” as explained by the founder of global marketing services firm iVisit Media, Ed Pereira.

Here is a look at the ring reveal, as shared by DAZN.

Times Square road closures

There will be road closures in Times Square, with the event impacting West 42nd to 49th Streets between Sixth and Eighth Avenues.

With the boxing ring being set up near where the ball drops, closures will be very similar to what is seen on New Year’s Eve. On Dec. 31, Seventh Avenue is closed for vehicle traffic from 42nd to 48th Streets and vehicle traffic on the side streets from 43rd to 48th Streets are closed from Sixth to Eighth Avenues.

While similar, there will be some differences given the particulars of the ring construction and the event. More updates on road closures will be made available when the event nears.
