Daytona Motor Mouths: Denny Hamlin gives Martinsville a whoopin’
The guys talk Denny Hamlin and Martinsville, Brad Keselowski and Darlington and the new NASCAR commissioner, as Ken checks in from Indianapolis.
Too Tough to Tame.
Lady in Black.
You can take your pick, which sort of tells you something about the historical significance of Darlington Raceway, which first hosted an automobile race 75 years ago. You don’t likely earn two nicknames unless you’ve been around a while and have done something right.
For several years now, the spring event at Darlington has been host to NASCAR’s annual “throwback weekend,” which generally features teams employing color combos from famous (or nearly famous) racers of days gone by.
One of those racers, Greg Biffle, will serve as Sunday’s honorary pace-car driver at the start of the race. After he peels off toward the garage, it’s just another race day on our way to the playoffs, but never exactly a routine operation at Darlington, where the racing lanes are tight enough to unnerve a London cabbie.
While those London cabbies have to worry about clanking outside mirrors with passing autos, stock-car racers this weekend will be dealing with that outside wall and the famed Darlington Stripe, signaling that someone got a little too cozy with the upper groove.
And as always, you can watch it all.
