Team USA Warned About Patrick Reed’s Toxicity Before Ryder Cup originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The 2025 Ryder Cup, scheduled for the final weekend in September, is beginning to enter the media’s consciousness and the consideration of golfers Keegan Bradley, the US team captain, might choose for its 12-player roster.

On Sunday, American golfer Patrick Reed won the LIV Golf Dallas tournament in a thrilling playoff against Paul Casey, Jinichiro Kozuma and Louis Oosthuizen.

With that victory, Reed has been thrust into the Ryder Cup conversation, although his resignation from the PGA Tour in June 2022 significantly hurts his chances of making the team.

Eamon Lynch of NBC’s “Golf Today” delivered a scorching take about Reed’s potential Ryder Cup candidacy on Monday, highlighting his uneven play in recent years and a series of controversies throughout his career.

“As a European, I hope he is (a potential pick for the Ryder Cup). … At a certain point, I think if you go back to the Gleneagles Ryder Cup [in 2014], that’s when the American team decided to prize unity over everything else. And that really became emphasized after Reed’s contretemps in Paris with Jim Furyk.”

The inopportune or embarrassing situation highlighted here by Lynch is about Reed’s comments after the 2018 Ryder Cup in which he complained about the Team USA’s pairings and his belief that teammate Jordan Spieth didn’t want to play with him.

Reed also blamed team captain Jim Furyk, who decided to pair Spieth with Justin Thomas.

The European team won the event, 17.5-10.5.

“If you’re Keegan Bradley and you have a deep bench on your team,” Lynch continued. “The idea of introducing toxicity into the team room makes no sense whatsoever. And it doesn’t get much more toxic than Team Reed. The idea of introducing that into a team room when you don’t need it just seems to me so outlandish.”

In 2022, a defamation lawsuit filed on Reed’s behalf alleged that the Golf Channel had conspired against him to misreport various facts through omission and falsification intentionally. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed, and the court ruled Reed must pay the defendants’ court costs.

Who will qualify for the 2025 U.S. team remains a wide-open race. The top six players in the Ryder Cup points list receive an automatic selection on the team. Scottie Scheffler has already earned a spot on the team.

In addition to the top six players, Bradley will have his choice of six more American golfers to select for the team.

The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held in Farmingdale, New York, at the famed Bethpage Black Course. The course is noted for its infamous sign at the first tee that reads, “WARNING The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers.”
