Augusta National is the type of course where we’ve seen players experience some of the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The train wrecks are almost as memorable as the moments of glory. We asked Masters participants of past and present to name their worst shot at Augusta National, and almost to a man they had no trouble remembering the time it all went horribly wrong. [Adam Scott was a lone exception who had some selective amnesia for this question.] From hero to zero at Augusta? It happens, but at least most of the players were able to laugh about it now.
Akshay Bhatia
I hit a snap-hook on 17 into 15 fairway that was pretty ugly.
Billy Horschel
I chunked it in the water at No. 12 a couple of years ago.
Brian Harman
I spun a wedge back into the water on 13 last year on my first hole after the re-start. That was a pretty bad shot.
Collin Morikawa
No. 9. Last year. The combination of the approach and bunker shot was bad plus bad.
Corey Conners
12th hole, after hitting my tee shot in the creek I dropped and wedged it in the creek again. I was playing with Jordan Spieth that day and he said to me, “Very familiar with that.”
Gary Player
It was the year I finished second to Jack (1964). I had the most perfect lie on 15 and knocked it in the water. It didn’t even resemble a good shot.
Gary Woodland
I hit it out of bounds on 5, which is pretty bad. I hit it in the bunker at No. 7 for eight straight rounds. That second shot is the most annoying shot for me.
Harris English
I came up short on 15 a couple times, posing on it and looked like an idiot with a 4-iron.
Hideki Matsuyama
I thought it was the best shot, but it resulted in the worst shot was the second shot on 15 when I won the Masters. It just went into the water.
Jason Day
I’ve hit a lot of bad shots at 11 that didn’t sniff the green. But in 2013, I backed up my best shot I ever hit there with my worst. I pulled it long left. I wasn’t dead but I didn’t give myself enough time to get myself back into neutral.
Justin Thomas
I have a crazy one that’s on YouTube where I had a 4-footer on 7 and it was blowing at least 30 straight in to straight down on the right and I missed the putt by inches and it went all the way down to the front of the green about 40 feet away.
Keegan Bradley
I’ve hit a lot of really bad shots on 1. I remember hitting a shot from the middle of the fairway and hitting it over by the ninth tee and I made triple, first hole of the tournament.
Kevin Kisner
Shanked a bunker shot at 7 in 2019 when I was in the top 8 or so. I was in the front bunker, easiest up-and-down in the world and I cold-shanked it over toward 17.
Ludvig Aberg
I dumped it in the water at 11 in the last round last year.
Matt Kuchar
I put one down in the Delta checkout counter (hooked tee shot at No. 2). That’s one stands out.
Rickie Fowler
It’d probably be the second shot into 10. I can’t remember what year it was, but I doubled the first and I doubled No. 10, but had one of my best putting rounds. I had 21 putts, and I shot 68 but the second shot I hit into 10, I hit it up into the bushes, up on the hill, right of 10, green.
Russell Henley
There’s a ridge at the fifth green and it goes along the front of it and I was in the front left, pin almost on the back right. You have to putt it up along this ridge, and then it catches a swale and it goes left to the hole. I hit the worst putt you’ve ever seen there.
Stewart Cink
18th tee I hit a pull and hit trees. I was hitting my second shot still from the downslope.
Tony Finau
I topped a driver off the deck on eight once. It didn’t even get up the hill. I almost missed the ball. It went 80 yards. That was embarrassing
Webb Simpson
Shank on 16.
Will Zalatoris
I duffed a wedge in the water on 12 in 2022 and made a good bogey and then proceeded to dump another wedge in the water from 90 yards at 13 and went over to my coach Josh Gregory and said, “We need to work on wedges this off-season.”
Wyndham Clark
Over the green on 14 into two, I had a makeable chip and it almost went in and then rolled at least 30 feet away.
Xander Schauffele
16 in 2021. It was bad timing to hit a bad shot. The next shot was worse, hit it over the green.
Zach Johnson
I’ve hit some people. That’s always awkward and unpleasant. I missed so many short putts and that’s always frustrating. I had a tee shot on 18 and it barely hit my clubface. It hit the toe of my club. and went right.
Adam Scott
So many to choose from but none come to mind. I don’t know, I must block out all of the bad ones.
