Scottie Scheffler Receives Message From Rory McIlroy After Open Championship Win originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

There’s a clear No. 1 and No. 2 in the world golf rankings right now: Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Both have had outstanding 2025 campaigns, but over the last four days—despite The Open Championship serving as a homecoming for McIlroy in Northern Ireland—it was all Scheffler. The 29-year-old dominated his way to his first Open Championship title, marking the fourth major victory of his career.

Scheffler entered the final round with a four-stroke lead and never wavered, finishing at 17-under par. Harris English placed second at 13-under, while McIlroy delivered a strong showing of his own, finishing tied for seventh at 10-under par.

After Sunday’s round, McIlroy had high praise for Scheffler, offering a strong message that reflected deep respect for the world’s top-ranked golfer.

“He’s an incredible player,” McIlroy said. “He’s been dominant this week. Honestly, he’s been dominant for the last couple years. He is the bar that we’re all trying to get to.”

Scheffler captured his first major back in 2022 when he won the Masters. Now, exactly 1,197 days later, he’s earned his fourth major title—a remarkable stat made even more astonishing by the fact that it’s the same number of days it took Tiger Woods to win his first four. The broadcast highlighted the coincidence as Scheffler approached the 18th hole on Sunday.

In 2025, while Rory McIlroy completed the career Grand Slam with a win at the Masters—and also added victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship—Scheffler has now claimed his fourth tournament title of the year. He’s recorded 11 consecutive top-10 finishes on tour and hasn’t placed lower than 25th in any event this season.
