The Lido, the two-year old course and site of the 124th Wisconsin State Amateur at the Sand Valley resort in Nekoosa, showed some teeth in the second round of the tournament on July 22 as the leaderboard was shuffled and scores skyrocketed.

K.C. Nickel of Waunakee took the second-round lead after carding a 2-under 70 to drop to 4-under for the tournament. He is one shot ahead of Ryonen Faris (Fond du Lac) and Drake Wilcox (Sheboygan).

Six other players are under par for the tournament, including two-time State Am champion Ryan Quinn at 2-under. With two rounds to play, Quinn has a shot to win a third title and first since he went back-to-back in 2001 and 2002.

First round leader Jack Rubo followed his opening round 6-under par 66 with a 10-over 82 to tumble down to a tie for 32nd.

Rubo’s struggles were indicative of a tougher day of play.

Eighteen players finished under par – including six players finishing in the 60s – in the first round on July 21. Only 11 players managed to break par in the second round, and the lowest round of the day belonged to Eau Claire’s Parker Etzel at 3-under par 69. He was also the only player to break 70.

The tournament now moves to the third round, and the field has been cut to the low 70 scores and ties – which is at 9-under.

Notable players missing the cut include former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS color analyst Tony Romo, who went 80-79 in his two rounds to finish 15-over. Past tournament champions Nick Nelson, Mike McDonald, Travis Meyer, Robert Gregorski and Pat Boyle also missed the cut.
