PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — The 2025 Walker Cup is underway.

The biennial competition between 10 of the best amateurs from the United States against their counterparts from Great Britain & Ireland kicked off Saturday morning at famed Cypress Point Club, ranked No. 1 on Golfweek’s Best list of Classic Courses in the U.S.

Saturday morning foursomes went to GB&I, which takes a 3-1 lead against the USA for the second straight Walker Cup. GB&I won the first three matches out before Michael La Sasso and Jase Summy tallied the Americans’ lone point.

“It’s been a good morning,” GB&I captain Dean Robertson said. “We won’t be getting — we’re under absolutely no illusions the task at hand. The goal is 13.5, and that’s what we’re — we’ve now made three points, so we’ve got 10.5 to go now.”

Added U.S. captain Nathan Smith: “They really came out extremely hot, and I think before you knew it, a lot of our matches, the first couple matches were 2 down through three holes. A lot of birdies. They just played well. We felt good about our matchups, our teams. We’ll have to look at that for tomorrow morning, see if we switch anything up.

“I think a lot of the guys still feel good, but we might mix a couple pairings up. But for the most part, they just played great.”

The U.S. dominates Saturday Singles, winning 5-2-1, and will take a one-point lead into Sunday. Come Sunday, the USA needs only 6½The U.S. dominates Saturday Singles, winning 5-2-1, and will take a one-point lead into Sunday. Come Sunday, the USA needs only 6½ points to retain the Walker Cup.

Connor Graham moves to 2-0 on the day with a 3-and-2 singles win against Ben James.

And like that, the USA is up 5-3 with four singles matches remaining. Mason Howell and Preston Stout get more red on the board, but GB&I leads in three of the four remaining.

The USA had tied the Walker Cup. Stew wins 7 and 5, and it’s now tied at 3.

The world No. 1 wins three straight holes to end his match, 4 and 3.

World No. 1 Jackson Koivun is now 2 up with 5 to play after this excellent approach.

Stew has a 1-5 record in foursomes at the Walker Cup, but he has been dominant in singles. He’s now 5 up thru 6 against Gavin Tiernan and has the biggest lead of any match. Only one is tied: Niall Shiels Donegan and Jacob Modleski.

Captain Nathan Smith said he wanted his team to have a better start Saturday afternoon after a slow one in foursomes. He got just that. The U.S is up in 6 of the 8 matches so far, a big difference from the morning.

Mason Howell, the U.S. Amateur champion, is 2 under thru 3 and 3 up on Luke Poulter.

Tyler Weaver and Jackson Koivun tie the opening hole with pars, and singles is officially underway at Cypress Point.

The morning belongs to the visitors. GB&I save par on the 18th, and Ethan Fang is unable to sink the birdie for the U.S., so GB&I captured three of the four points in foursomes and is in a great spot heading into singles.

Michael La Sasso, the NCAA individual champion, and Jase Summy, who last Sunday won a college tournament at Spyglass Hill, put the first point on the board for the U.S. with a 4-and-2 win over Cameron Adam and Dominic Clemons. GB&I is 1 up on the 17th green in the final Saturday foursomes match.

Charlie Forster and Luke Poulter take the second match on the famous 16th green. They defeat USA’s Ben James and Stewart Hagestad, 3 and 2, and GB&I had two points on the board. In the 2023 Walker Cup, GB&I led after the first session, and it’s looking like it’ll be a similar score if the leaderboard holds.

In the first match out, GB&I wins four of the last five holes to tally the first point, winning 3 and 1.

No. 1 amateur Jackson Koivun buried the 8 footer for birdie on 11 to give the U.S. a 1-up lead for the first time in the match. Tommy Morrison had a brilliant cut shot to the back pin, and it results in good for the Americans.

The underdogs have started well in foursomes. They lead in three of the four matches early on. At the St. Andrews Trophy last month, where GB&I beat Continental Europe, they won 7.5 of 8 total foursomes points.

GB&I had three birdies in three holes to go 2 up in the opening match, but the Americans have won holes 4 and 5 to tie the match.

In the first match off, Connor Graham hits the approach to within 10 feet and Tyler Weaver makes the birdie to go 1 up. Tommy Morrison’s approach went long for the U.S, and Jackson Koivun could only lag the putt from long of the green to 3 feet.

On Saturday, there are eight singles matches, while all 10 players from each side compete in singles on Sunday. One full point is awarded for each victory, while a half-point is earned for matches that are all square after 18 holes.
