STATE COLLEGE — The Saegertown boys golf team placed eighth at the PIAA Boys Golf Class 2A Championship tournament on Wednesday.

The tournament was hosted by Penn State University’s Blue Course. Saegertown fired a 323, 35-over 323, to claim eighth.

Freshman Mason Gjovik led the Panthers with a 69, which was the lowest individual score at the tournament. Gjovik was even through nine and 3-under on the back to come in 3-under on the day.

“Mason had a good round. He caught fire on the back with a few birdies,” Saegertown head coach Brian Hanley said. “He played it two days in a row so he had some course knowledge.”

Fellow freshman Tyler Cherpak carded an 81 for Saegertown. Ryder Bailey and Everett Gardner shot an 83 and a 90, respectively, to round out the scoring for Saegertown. Mason Allio’s 91 was not included in the team’s scoring.

“I was pleased with how we played. Some of the kids were disappointed in their scores, but it’s a big stage,” Hanley said. “There are a lot of announcements and big crowds and clapping and we’re not really used to playing in situations like that.”

Saegertown was the District 10 runner-up and earned an at-large bid to compete at the state tournament.

Cathedral Prep, the District 10 champion, placed second on Wednesday with a 305. Scranton Prep won the tournament at 8-over 296.

“I had the kids write their goals down at beginning of the year and we went over them last night,” Hanley said “Region title, we did that, district title, we nearly did that, and go to states, which was a pleasant surprise.”

Saegertown, which had no seniors this year, has a bright future.

“Obviously at the beginning of the year I had expectations to be better than last year. We dropped 20-25 strokes in region matches so that was very exciting. We have three juniors and their averages have dropped each year. hopefully that can drop again next year,” Hanley said. “We have very high expectations for next year. Overall, I am very pleased with this season.”
