Scottie Scheffler ran away from the field at the PGA Championship on Sunday, May 18, earning his third major championship victory and 15th tournament win since 2022.
The PGA Tour took to social media following Scheffler’s five-shot win (-11) at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, to celebrate the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer. In doing so, however, the tour’s social media team trolled the hometown Carolina Panthers of the NFL in a now-deleted post that appeared across multiple platforms.
The post included a graphic with side-by-side photographs of Scheffler hoisting his championship trophy and Panthers quarterback Bryce Young running down the field with a football tucked under his arm. The caption read: “Wins since 2022,” pointing out that Carolina’s pro football team has won just 14 games during that stretch, while Scheffler has won 15 tournaments.
Joe Person of The Athletic, who covers the Panthers for that outlet, reposted the graphic to his X account after the PGA Tour deleted it.
The PGA Tour trolled the Panthers on Instagram and X, but has since deleted the post.
Probably did not sit well with David Tepper, considering he’s a member at Quail Hollow and lives on the course. pic.twitter.com/fGoUMOrkwx— Joe Person (@josephperson) May 19, 2025
“The PGA Tour trolled the Panthers on Instagram and X, but has since deleted the post,” Person wrote. “Probably did not sit well with [Panthers owner] David Tepper, considering he’s a member at Quail Hollow and lives on the course.”
Scheffler, 28 years old, is also a two-time Masters champion. After his victory at the PGA Championship Sunday, and considering his top ranking in the sport, Scheffler is all but certain to enter the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania next month (June 11-14) as among the favorites to win golf’s third major championship of the 2025 season.
