Genoa chose to make a play on his name in the announcement, because explorer Christopher Columbus hailed from the port city and his name in Italian is Cristoforo Colombo.
They therefore posted an image of the striker in the style of an ancient Columbus portrait.
A product of the Milan youth academy, he went on a series of loan experiences to Cremonese, SPAL, Lecce, Monza and most recently Empoli.
He is coming off a campaign where he scored six goals in 37 Serie A appearances, a personal best, but could not prevent Empoli from suffering relegation to Serie B.
