Laurel golfers take titles for Mid-Am, Super Seniors
LAUREL — Ashley Cortez completed a two-round comeback on Saturday while Deb Porcarelli and Sue Matson finished with wire-to-wire wins at the Montana State Women’s Mid-Amateur, Senior and Super-Senior Championships at the Laurel Golf Club.
Cortez and Matson, both hometown golfers, each earned one-stroke victories.
In the Mid-Amateur, Cortez followed up her tournament low score of 5-over 77 in the second round with a third round 81. Her total of 243 edged out Heather Biggerstaff, who fired an 84 after coming into Saturday with a two-stroke lead.
In third place at 252 was Sable Kerzmann of Colstrip; fourth went to the 2022 Mid-Am champion Kylie Perlinski of Bozeman.
The Senior Amateur Championship provided the least amount of drama of the three championships: Great Falls’ Deb Porcarelli cruised to a 20-stroke title win at 251. She saved all three of her birdies of the week for her final round of play.
Bobbie Lacklen of Libby was second at 271; in third place at 275 was Shelly Hayler of Missoula.
In the Super Senior Amateur, Matson was able to fend off a third round surge from Helena’s Susan Court to finish her wire-to-wire run. An MSGA Hall of Famer, Matson previously won the State Senior Am four times (2007-08, 2011 and 2017). Susan Court, who has won three State Senior Am titles, fired a tournament-best 79 Saturday to make up five strokes, but finished one stroke back.
