Team Ireland’s Daina Moorehouse and Dean Clancy will box for medals on Friday at the World Boxing Cup in Brazil.

Both came through their respective last 16 bouts on Thursday, but there was no joy for Jenny Lehane or Patsy Joyce.

Moorehouse advanced to the last eight in the 51kg category with a 4-1 split decision verdict over Poland’s Natalia Kuczewska.

The Wicklow woman, who boxed at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, told Boxing Ireland it “took me a while to get in to the fight” but did enough to set up a quarter-final against Kazakhstan’s Alua Balikibekova.

Clancy, who also boxed at the 2024 Games, came through on a split decision against Mexico’s Hugo Barron at 65kg.

The Sligo, who was deducted a point, finished strong to set up a meeting with Brazil’s Yuri Falcao for a place on the podium, a fight be believes will be “a great test, especially in Brazil against the home fighter”.

Lehane bowed out at the quarter-final stage of the 54kg category, going down to Serbia’s Sara Cirkovic ona unanimous decision, while Joyce was deducted two points on his way to a unanimous decision loss by Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonov in their 55kg last 16 bout.
