LIV Michigan’s cancellation would expose a major weakness for LIV Golf against the PGA Tour

LIV Golf is likely to see its season finale cancelled, in what would be a disaster for the tour.

That’s according to one of their own players, Martin Kaymer, who said there is a 95% chance the final event of the year will not go ahead.

2026 has been disastrous for LIV Golf. Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed left, the Saudi Public Investment Fund withdrew support, and the Asian Tour, once connected to LIV, is now a partner with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.

LIV Michigan’s cancellation is just the latest blow, and it’s exposed a major weakness in their model.

LIV Michigan’s cancellation would expose major hole in LIV Golf

As LIV CEO Scott O’Neil is on a desperate search for investment, his pitch has been centered around a number of key areas. One is the uniqueness of team golf, but that has been undermined by the cancellation of LIV’s Team Championship finale.

Another key focus for O’Neil has been how LIV aims to bring golf all over the world. While the PGA Tour focuses on the United States, O’Neil has positioned LIV as the world’s golf tour.

His aim was to partner LIV with national opens around the world thanks to the success of the tour in Australia and South Africa.

But the PGA Tour has aligned itself with the Australian Open and the Asian Tour in recent weeks, and the DP World Tour is home to a number of national opens like the Scottish and Spanish.

This means LIV is now more dependent on the US market than O’Neil might have liked, and that spells a major problem. The two LIV events that may not take place are in Louisiana and Michigan, two US-based events.

The American market appears to be the first to reject LIV Golf. The PGA Tour has the country under wraps when it comes to professional golf, which is likely why LIV wanted to take their tour worldwide.

But with the PGA Tour reinforcing its international ties, and with some of LIV’s American events likely to be cancelled, the walls are closing in on the breakaway league.
