In his first round at the U.S. Open on Thursday, Keith Mitchell made tournament history when he became the first golfer to post 29 on the front nine at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
His record-setting 29 came after he shot a 41 on the back nine en route to an even-par, 70 on the day. That was just the first of four-consecutive even-par rounds of 70 he’d shoot for the weekend, setting a new record at the U.S. Open.

While he ended up with rounds of even par, Mitchell’s tournament was anything but smooth as he racked up 13 bogeys and a double-bogey on the weekend. In direct opposition, though, he also carded 13 birdies and an eagle to sit at even par for the tournament.

In the end, Mitchell finished in a tie for 4th, easily his best finish in a major tournament – his previous best was a T-20 at the U.S. Open in 2023.
“I might have not won, but I felt like I achieved a lot more than potentially I thought I was going to after about two hours into the [first]] round,” Mitchell admitted after his final round. “… I think I won the week after that start.”

His T-4 at the U.S. Open is his best finish in a tournament this season, besting a solo 5th place finish at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson late last month.
