Gary Player has seen the game change beyond all comprehension over the past 70 years.

Since Player’s first PGA Tour win in 1958, the popularity of the game has increased exponentially, as has the money involved in it.

The 90-year-old South African competed with true greats of the game, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tomas Watson.

It’s fair to say that Gary Player punched well above his weight throughout his career, with 159 professional wins to his name, including nine major championships.

Only three male golfers have won more majors than Player in the game’s history – Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Walter Hagen.

However, the diminutive South African firmly believes he would have won more had he had one particular club in his bag.

Gary Player claimed he would’ve won more Masters with specific club in his bag

Player spoke during an instructional clinic, which was posted on Sonic Titan Golf’s YouTube channel, about one club that completely changed the way he played.

He explained how he would have won more Masters titles, had he used a 9-wood at the time.

Now this little club here, this is a 9-wood, the nine-time major champion said.

I can honestly say that this club here is the greatest club I have had in my golfing career.

I got to Augusta at the age of 66 and 67, and this is the equivalent of a 3-iron, and I hit it up in the air. I could never do that, Nicklaus could always do that.

So I had to run it in.

“I can honestly say if I had this club in the early-60s and 70s, I would have won at Augusta more than three times.

Xander Schauffele shared a similar message to Gary Player

Xander Schauffele is one of the premium ball-strikers in the professional game.

However, even Schauffele highlighted just how difficult it is to hit long irons last year.

Oh, a three-iron. It shouldn’t be in the bag. A lot of pros don’t even use a 3-iron, he said.

You need speed to get it up in the air, there are hybrids and utility woods and 7-woods out there that are way easier to hit.

3-irons, you can’t hit out of the rough, 7-woods you can or hybrids you can.

Any amateur golfer with a handicap of probably three or above should ditch long irons immediately.

7-woods and 9-woods are the way forward. If they’re good enough for Gary Player, they should be good enough for us!
