The first round of the 105th Wisconsin State Open was shortened due to storms Aug. 18, with 35 golfers in the 186-player field needing to finish their rounds Aug. 19.
A few players took advantage of the right side of the draw, however, including all the leaders — a group that includes four past champions in the top 10.
Oconomowoc professional Sam Weatherhead, who played at Michigan State from 2013-17, made seven birdies against one bogey to take the outright lead with a 6-under par 66 on the Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run in Kohler.
Weatherhead is looking for his first State Open title. He finished 10th in 2024 after he was tied for the lead heading into the final round.
Weatherhead birdied the par-4, 18th hole to take a one-shot lead over 2023 champion Cameron Huss. Huss, who won the event as an amateur and is now a professional, carded six birdies against one bogey en route to a 5-under par 67.
Huss, a Kenosha native who played at the University of Wisconsin, turned pro in 2024. In three PGA Tour Americas events in the summer of 2025 he has made three cuts, with his best finish being a tie for 33rd at the Diners Club Peru Open on May 4.
Additionally, Huss has played in three events on the Korn Ferry Tour so far in 2025 but has missed the cut each time.
Amateur Kade Wieland got to 5-under and just beat the setting sun to complete his round. He birdied three of his last eight holes to tie Huss for second.
Amateur Jacob Beckman is alone in fourth place after shooting a 4-under 68 while Tyler Leach finished 3-under.
Past champions Daniel Mazziotta (2022) and Jordan Elsen (2016) and amateur Mason Schmidtke also finished their State Open rounds under par with 2-under 70s to stay within striking distance of the leaders.
Charlie Delsman finished his day with a 1-under 71 and is tied for ninth with two-time champion Harrison Ott and Emmet Herb, but the latter two players need to finish their rounds on Aug. 19. They each have three holes left.
Past champion Jordan Niebrugge (2011), now an assistant coach with the Marquette University men’s golf team, shot an even-par 72.
First round play will restart at 7:15 a.m. for the players that need to complete their round. All other tee times will be delayed by an hour. New tee times will be posted at www.wisconsin.pga.com. Two players withdrew from the competition during the first round.
The State Open is a four-round event held over three days, with 72 holes being played over the Meadow Valleys (first, third and fourth rounds) and River Courses (second round) at Blackwolf Run. The field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties after the completion of the second round.
The final 36 holes are scheduled to be played on the Meadow Valleys Course on Aug. 20.
