The Reds have paid an initial £100m to the German side in order to sign their star player. That could reach around £118m if add-ons are met, taking it past the British transfer record.

But Wirtz is just the latest deal. Liverpool signed Jeremie Frimpong, also from Leverkusen, and Armin Pecsi, from Puskas Akademia before him.

In terms of sales, Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid, while Caoimhin Kelleher has joined Brentford. Now we’re on the brink of seeing another first-team player leave.

Jarell Quansah nears Bayer Leverkusen move

Liverpool are now very, very close to selling Jarell Quansah to Leverkusen. It would be the third deal between the two clubs this summer.

Kicker reports that virtually everything is now agreed on. Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes has been out at the UEFA U-21 European Championship where Quansah is representing England in order to move things along.

The Liverpool defender has completely agreed to the move, while a fee should sit at just more than €30m. Really, we’re just waiting on a medical here.

The report makes it clear, however, that we might need to wait. England are still competing at the Euros and the quick turnaround on matches doesn’t present much time to hold a full medical.

But there’s no rush, either. Everyone appears happy to wait things out and that will either be post-tournament or after the semi-finals if England are knocked out.

This one, then, looks certain. Quansah will join a new-look Leverkusen squad under Erik Ten Hag and try to fulfil the kind of promise he showed in the 2023/24 season.
