When the Miami Dolphins take the field against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, the team’s star running back will be in the backfield. De’Von Achane will be ready for the contest, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Wednesday.

That should come as welcome news to both Dolphins fans and fantasy managers. After taking part in the team’s first preseason game, Achane sustained a calf injury and was held out of the remaining preseason contests. The 23-year-old also missed practices, though the team deemed his absence as precautionary.

It appears that was truly the case, as Achane is expected to be ready to go for Week 1.

Achane is coming off a fantastic second season in the NFL in which he ran for 907 yards and six touchdowns and hauled in 78 passes for 592 yards and six receiving touchdowns.

Bigger things are expected of the youngster in Year 3. After taking on a bigger workload last season, Achane is expected to serve as the team’s primary option at running back. That wasn’t the case in 2024, when he had to contend with Raheem Mostert for carries.

It’s unclear whether the Dolphins will give Achane a full workload in Week 1 coming off the injury. The team’s running back depth is already thin after Jaylen Wright sustained a leg injury during the preseason.

If — and when — Achane needs a breather in Week 1, he’ll likely be replaced by rookie Ollie Gordon II, who turned in a solid preseason after being selected by the team in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
