The Miami Dolphins officially announced their intention to release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with a post-June 1st designation when the league year officially begins on Wednesday, leaving them with a pretty significant QB sized hole on the roster.

Of course, the organization and new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan have been linked to this year’s hottest free agent signal caller, Malik Willis, ever since Sullivan and new head coach Jeff Hafley left Green Bay for Miami earlier this offseason. But what if the Dolphins strike out during their pursuit of the former Packers backup?

On Monday, Connor Hughes, an NFL reporter for SNY in New York, reported that the Dolphins and Geno Smith have mutual interest in each other if the team isn’t able to strike a deal with Willis. The New York Jets also have interest in signing the 35 year-old, but according to Hughes, Smith — a South Florida native — would prefer to head home and play for Miami instead of returning to the team that drafted him in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

The legal tampering period of free agency opened on Monday, so expect things to move quickly across the league — even if players aren’t technically able to put ink to paper and sign contracts until Wednesday when free agency officially begins.
