The last time McGregor and Holloway fought, “The Notorious” had just one UFC fight under his belt.
After being signed by the UFC in 2013 and making his debut with a knockout vs. Marcus Brimage, McGregor was originally scheduled to face Andy Ogle for his second bout, but it was later switched to Holloway.
McGregor would win the fight via unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, 30–26). After the win, an MRI later showed that McGregor had torn his ACL during the fight, requiring surgery and keeping him sidelined for an extended period.

McGregor last stepped into the cage around five years before he’s scheduled to make his return.
On July 10, 2021, he took on Dustin Poirier, which resulted in a TKO loss for McGregor. The former two-weight UFC champion suffered a broken leg in the loss.
McGregor was originally going to make a return in 2024 to face Michael Chandler, but he later withdrew due to a toe injury. He has also dealt with issues outside of the Octagon during his absence; in November 2024, an Irish jury found McGregor liable in a civil sexual assault case stemming from an incident in 2018, and he later lost an appeal.
While McGregor spent the majority of his career fighting at 145 and 155 pounds, his return vs. Holloway will come at 170 pounds.
