PITTSBURGH — Auston Matthews scored his 22nd goal of the season in the second period of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ road game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The goal gave Matthews 390 for his career, moving him into sole possession of second on the Maple Leafs’ all-time goals scored list, past Darryl Sittler and just 30 goals behind Hockey Hall of Famer Mats Sundin for the all-time lead.

Auston Matthews has solidified himself as one of the NHL’s premier goal-scorers. So it’s no surprised he’s accomplished this feat in just his ninth NHL season..

Matthews has won the  Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy awarded to the NHL’s top goal scorer, three times in his career.  This underscores his consistent dominance in goal scoring. In that span he twice scored 60 or more goals in a season. In 2023-24, Matthews set the record for most goals scored in a season in the NHL salary cap era, scoring 69.

This season, Matthews has been below his usual torrid pace. His season has been marred by a lingering upper-body injury that forced him to a total of 15 games.

Mitch Marner assists on Matthews goal on Sunday, moving the forward to fifth on the all-time points list with 714.
