Every Miami Dolphins training camp ends with the cut of several players to get the team down to its final 53-man roster to begin the season. Within those cuts are always one or more players that surprise the media and the fan base. With that in mind, I asked the following question this past Monday:

Which player currently expected by the media and fan base to make the Miami Dolphins’ final 53-man roster do you believe will be a surprise cut ahead of the 2026-2027 NFL season, and why? If you foresee multiple surprise cuts, please identify all of them and explain your reasoning.

Below are some of your thoughts and answers-

SlayerNation1 is bemoaning the fact that scoring via field goals has now seemingly become a game plan for some because every damn kicker can seemingly score from midfield. At least I think that’s the point that’s being made.

It is officially the National SOCCER League now, ergo if any Kicker gets cut, it would be surprising… and quickly replaced with another soccer player.

Teams are close to keeping 5 trick-shot Place Kickers and flopping Punters on the 53 roster as specialists. Move the ball 20 yards and then kick a ball straight and far…. how scintillating.

PA phinphan points to Trey Moore as a player that could possibly unseat multiple players at different positions.

Uche or Ojabo could end up on the outside looking in especially if Trey Moore gets designated as just an edge. Maybe even both depending on Ferrell. The five edges could be Robinson, Ferrell, Moore, Llewellyn, and Reiger.

The same could be said of Dodson or Gay, Jr. if Moore gets an LB designation. Even if Moore stays as Edge/LB, one these guys may not make it.

Unless he completely balls out, Cameron Goode is going to be looking for a new gig. Although, I don’t know if anyone is expecting him to make the team or not.

Dolphster believes that despite the lack of depth in the WR room, one of the vets that were signed this offseason will be without a gig come September.

Even though the WR Room is lacking talent, I think they will cut one of the veteran receivers; either Tolbert or Atwell.

JKBMia has a list of guys that were held over from the last regime that may or may not make it to the start of the regular season.

“Surprise” Cuts to me would be :

Dodson

OG3/Wright

Malik Washington

Marshall/Duck

All holdovers from the last regime that have underwhelmed a bit and may not fit the new staff’s liking.

I wouldn’t anticipate any of them getting cut, but I could see it, so that’s why they’re on this list.

MIAMI235 makes the point that in the NFL, few players are truly secure in their jobs from year to year.

Looking at it, in the rear view mirror….what Dolphins Fan, would have thought that Tua, Hill and Waddle would all be gone at the end of one season ?

( Not all technically cuts, but that is really just semantics for this story).

Phoenix6 lists three guys, including Dodson, who might get traded away before camp is out, depending on any potential injuries that may occur before that point.

My lowly take would be three.

Three seemingly surprises.
Tyrel Dodson: Linebacker depth is crowded with new draft additions, putting him under pressure. The pressure could make him pop to the top. But it’s a difficult camp for him.
Matthew Butler: Faces an uphill battle for interior defensive line snaps behind the main rotation. The rookies & 2nd yr vets are just too much to overcome… even if he equals them.
Malik Washington: Caught in a heavy wide receiver numbers crunch under the new coaching staff scheme. May be the biggest surprise. The rooks are just better, having him take a 2nd yr to be viable. He didn’t show enough last yr either.

He showed he could be this no-pads-on camp, but there’s better to be had coming up.

StanleyDoyle1 believes that Ewers could be on his way out.

Ewers. Not on merit, but because Gronowski impresses and is no threat to their guy Willis.

Just a fan points out that, despite us fans being the driving force of the league at the end of the day, we have zero say about the product on the field.

Like, I have said before, seems like a million timesn It doesn’t matter what I think what the team does. That’s the real reality, because I’m just a real fan, and that’s it, no power with the exception of prayer.

MiamiItaliano believes the guy with the most interesting name might be gone come the regular season.

I think the surprise cut is Storm Duck. A lot of people expect him to make the team. But the DB room looks to be crowded now.

Well, that’s our selection of players that may be surprise cuts, and no doubt some of these are correct; we just don’t know which ones at this point. I personally see some surprise cuts as a good thing, especially if replaced by a rookie because it means, in many cases, that the rookie was better from the start than most of us believed he would be, allowing him to unseat the veteran. Other times, I suspect if the rookie is close enough to the veteran, he will get the nod just due to the cap implications. If you missed our initial post, please share your surprise cuts in the comments section below. As always thank you to each of you who took the time to answer our Phinsider Question Of The Day.
