Jack Nicklaus is arguably the greatest golfer to have ever graced the game.
Nicklaus won 73 PGA Tour titles, including a record 18 major championships throughout his career.
One of the Golden Bear’s greatest strengths during his prime was the prodigious distance he was able to hit the ball with his driver.

Jack Nicklaus was known to regularly hit the golf ball 300+ yards off the tee back in the 1960s and 1970s – something that was unheard of at the time.
The now 86-year-old’s enormous length off the tee was a huge advantage for him, and it played a key role in him winning so many major titles.

Interestingly, though, Nicklaus has always labeled distance off the tee as ‘golf’s biggest danger’.
Many old-fashioned, traditional-type golf courses are in danger of being made obsolete with so many players flying the ball 320+ yards through the air nowadays.
Why Jack Nicklaus authorized a custom golf ball which travelled half the distance
The idea of limiting distance that a golf ball travels is nothing new.

In the spring of 1982, Nicklaus commissioned MacGregor to develop a short-distance golf ball.
That was because developers of The Britannia Resort in Grand Cayman wished to offer golf as an amenity, but had only about one-third of the average golf course acreage.
Nicklaus was tasked with designing a short golf course, but the project would only work if those playing the layout had to use a golf ball which flew only half as far as a normal one.

“The golf ball always has dictated how much land we need for a course. I felt we could tailor the ball to the land,“ said Nicklaus.
MacGregor then submitted at least a dozen prototypes before the so-called ‘Cayman ball’ was born.

Interestingly, the ball was renamed the ‘Modified Distance Ball’ because a Japanese golf company had already patented the name ‘Cayman’.
The ball performed almost identically when chipping, putting and from the sand, but it traveled half the distance of a conventional ball when struck from the tee, fairways and out of the rough.

The modified ball was a huge success at the time.
However, it slowly started to disappear from mainstream use as golfers became tired of only being able to hit their drives a certain distance.
Nicklaus was clearly ahead of his time, with the new golf ball rollback rule set to come into play in January 2030.

The aim of the rollback is to preserve some of the best and most prestigious old golf courses, and to ensure a sustainable future for the game.
However, whether the golf ball rollback will prove to be a success remains to be seen.
