JACKSON — The way the greens are cut at the Country Club of Jackson has Tequesta, Florida-resident Eric Cole feeling at home.

“These are cut so low there’s very little grain,” Cole said. “Growing up in Florida, it’s a common grass that you putt on. So very familiar with it.”

Cole is one of many PGA Tour players in the 2025 Sanderson Farms Championship who have high praise for the greens at the Country Club of Jackson.

The greens are Champion Bermudagrass cut to 0.13 inches. They were rolling just under a 14 on the Stimpmeter on Oct. 3. It’s a notch above the standard tour speed.

Cole has enjoyed the putting surface enough to call the greens some of the best on the PGA Tour.

“I think they’re fast,” Cole said. “They’re a great speed to putt. Downhill they can get away from you, but you know that.”

What does “Old-school Bermudagrass” mean? The grain makes them simple to read.

“It’s probably a pretty old strand of Bermuda, so they can get grainy if they’re longer,” Cole said. “These are cut so low there’s very little grain.”

Cole’s description plays into an old-school theme that Vince Whaley also detected from the 7,460-yard, par-72 course.

“I honestly love this place,” Whaley said. “It’s that old-school, tight golf course with not a ton of trouble. You just plod it around and keep it in front of you, and you can play well. It’s some of the best greens we play on all year.”

Cole said one benefit of the greens at the Country Club of Jackson is the consistency. All 18 greens behave the same way, which is not the case at all stops on the PGA Tour.

“It’s a very fair golf course,” Max Homa said Oct. 1. “It’s always in really good shape, especially the greens. It’s right I front of you. There’s not a lot of tricky things going on.”
