Lopez (22-2) dethroned Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 to become the unified lightweight champion. After George Kambosos Jr. took his gold, he moved to 140 and won six straight, beating Josh Taylor for the WBO and Ring belts. His win streak came to an end against Shakur Stevenson.
Returning to action for the first time in seven months, a motivated Lopez is ready to leave his mark in the welterweight division.
“I’m fighting a big puncher at 147 and going up to that weight for the first time. We’re taking a risk, because it’s no risk, no reward. I’m just focusing on my objectives so I can come out victorious,” Lopez said.
Romero (17-2) is a former WBA super lightweight champion, beating Ismael Barroso via a controversial stoppage. “Rolly” is 3-1 in his last four fights, beating Ryan Garcia last May in Times Square.
A colorful personality, Romero looks to put his friendship with Lopez to the side, picturing the latter as just another obstacle in his way.
“Yeah we’re friends and we know each other’s families, but none of that matters on August 22,” said Romero. “I’m looking to be a Hall of Famer, just like Teofimo is. The only way to do that is to go through each other!”
