Golfweek’s annual list of the top public golf courses in each state has been released for 2025, and only one metro course made it in the state’s top 5.
A network of nationwide judges votes on Golfweek’s Best annual list to compile the Best Courses You Can Play list for each state. The hundreds of members of the course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them on 10 criteria on a points basis of 1 through 10. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings are averaged to produce all our Golfweek’s Best course rankings.
The courses on this list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there’s a will, there’s a tee time — no membership required. Some courses on the list may be considered traditionally private. Still, they do allow non-hosted, non-member guest play in some limited form, generally through a local hotel or similar arrangement.
Of the top 5, two made their way onto the top 200 courses in the nation. Here are some of the best golf courses in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma’s best public-access golf courses
Karsten Creek
Sitting at best in the state and tied for 92nd in the nation is the Stillwater 1994 golf course. The average rating puts Karsten Creek at 7.16/10. The course was designed by Tom Fazio.
While the course ranks in the 90s, this represents a drop for the course, which previously was tied for 83 in 2024.
Jimmie Austin GC at the University of Oklahoma
The Sooner golf course is not only the second-best public course in the state, but also among some of the best in the nation. Tied for 193 on 2025’s list, the par-72, 18-hole course has been ranked as one of the most affordable places to play golf.
It also holds the distinction of being the first university course to host the US Amateur Public Links Championship in 2009.
Shangri-La Resort
The paradise of Shangri-La comes to life with the 27-hole lakeside course. The modern course boasts a scenic view of Grand Lake, which shapes the edges of the golf course. From the golf lessons with professional golfers to the greens, the grounds rolling hills demand a strong approach to the game of golf.
Cherokee Hills
At Hard Rock Tulsa, golfers of all levels are positively challenged on Cherokee Hills. Often used for golf tournaments and casual golfers alike, the Hills sits as the fourth best golf course in the state.
Chickasaw Pointe
Opened in 1999 with a 7,085-yard Championship layout, the rolling hills, lake views and crisp greens of Chickasaw Pointe make their way to the fifth best golf course in the state.
The par-72 course provides a challenging experience for golfers of all levels and is open year-round, with its busy season from April 1 to the end of October.
