HURON — The final Class B state golf tournament spots were secured on Friday, with reigning state boys champion Wessington Springs finishing at the top of the leaderboard.

The Spartans claimed the Region 2B boys team championship at Broadland Creek Golf Course, posting a winning score of 237. Wessington Springs and second-place finisher De Smet (250) both advanced to the state tournament. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket finished in third, missing the final qualifying spot by two strokes. Howard (267) was seventh.

Wolsey-Wessington’s Larz Tvedt was the boys medalist after a 5-under 67, carding a back-nine score of 29 with a pair of eagles and four birdies against Broadland Creek’s par-72 layout. Wessington Springs’ JD Thompson was second with a 3-over 75 and Luke Larson came in third at 4-over 76. Elkton-Lake Benton’s Tanner Drietz (78) and De Smet’s Maxxon Kees (79) completed the top-five.

Other area boys qualifiers include SCW’s Ethan Schmiedt (seventh, 81), Sam Baruth (ninth, 82) and McCoy Shulz (21st, 89), Howard’s Weston Remmers (11th, 85) and Luke Koepsell (13th, 86), and Wessington Springs’s Heyns Bothma (15th, 86). Blake Miller (26th, 93) also qualified as part of the Spartans’ team-winning performance.

On the girls side, Howard’s Halle Schulz fired a round of 86 with a birdie to win the individual title by three strokes over runner-up Ayla Texley of Estelline/Hendricks. The Tigers also qualified for state as a team, finishing in second place with a 302 team score. Deubrook Area claimed the girls team title at 284. De Smet’s Harper Anderson (92) finished in third and Deubrook teammates Brooklyn Gladis (92) and Ava Crooks (96) completed the top-five.

Additional area girls state qualifiers are Wessington Springs’ Taylor Braun (ninth, 104), SCW’s Tatiana Roberts (10th, 104), Howard’s Kenya Kizer (13th, 106) and Reese Rudebusch (15th, 110).

The Class B state golf tournament begins on Monday, June 2, in Watertown. The girls tournament will be held at Prairie Winds Golf Course, while the boys will be contested at Cattail Crossing Golf Course.
