Vince Sigl has had a memorable two months, as the Seymour High School senior followed up his WIAA Division 2 individual title in June with a Wisconsin State Amateur championship on July 24 at The Lido at Sand Valley Resort in Nekoosa.
Sigl earned WIAA medalist honors thanks to a one-hole playoff victory, and he captured his first State Am title by defeating University of Wisconsin’s Charlie Erlandson on a single playoff hole.
The duo finished the fourth round of tournament play tied at 2-under par 286. They were the only two players to finish the tournament under par. Sigl fired a 4-under 68 in the final round to charge up the leaderboard while Erlandson shot a 3-under 69 to set up the playoff.
Sigl won with a birdie on the par 4, ninth hole while Erlandson bogeyed.
In the 124th playing of the State Am, Sigl is the 16th different champion since 2010. Tyler Obermueller won his first title in 2009 and won again in 2022.
Will Harned (Nashotah) shot a 2-under 70 in his final round to finish third at even par 289 for the tournament. K.C. Nickel (Waunakee) finished fourth at 1-over 290. Past champion Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay) made a late charge with a 4-under 68 of his own, but finished tied for fifth with third-round leader Drake Wilcox (Sheboygan) at 2-over 290 for the tournament.
The top 10 was rounded out by Cody Guetzke of Hartland (7th, 3-over 291), Ross Thomson of Oconomowoc (t8th, 4-over 292), Russell Dettmering of Merrill (t8th, 4-over 292) and Jacob Beckman of Middleton (10th, 5-over 293).
The final round began with Wilcox holding a one-shot lead, but a dozen players were within three of him. Schultz made the biggest move up the leaderboard (15 spots) while Sigl vaulted up five positions to force the playoff.
