SAN FRANCISCO — It’s time to find out who’s going to make match play at the 2025 U.S. Amateur.

The 312 players in the field at the biggest amateur championship in the world will fight it out Tuesday at Olympic Club’s Lake Course and Ocean Course for one of 64 spots in match play, which begins Wednesday at the Lake Course.

U.S. Amateur cut line watch

As play begins Tuesday, the cut line sits at 2 over, but there are 101 players at or above that number. It’s more likely than not the cut line sits at 3 or 4 over after Tuesday’s second round, but only time will tell how the line will move.

U.S. Amateur format

Every player in the field will compete in 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, where the field will be cut to the low 64 players for match play, which begins Wednesday. A playoff will be used if needed to determine the 64 players. Then, the Round of 64 takes place Wednesday, Rounds of 32 and 16 on Thursday, quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday and the 36-hole championship final on Sunday.

What the winner of U.S. Amateur receives

  • A gold medal
  • Custody of the Havemeyer Trophy for one year
  • Exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs
  • Exemption into 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Country Club, in Southampton, N.Y.
  • Exemption into 2026 Open Championship, conducted by The R&A, at Royal Birkdale (must be an amateur)
  • Likely invitation into 2026 Masters Tournament (must be an amateur)
  • Name engraved into 2025 USGA Champions’ plaque that resides in the USGA Museum’s Hall of Champions in Liberty Corner, N.J.
