Tyson Fury’s latest comeback ended in a convincing victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov — and a callout to Anthony Joshua to make ‘The Battle of Britain’ happen at last.
Fury’s first bout since the second of his competitive points defeats to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk was a unanimous decision win over the game but limited Makhmudov, who dug deep to go the distance after his Plan A of a first-round KO fell flat.
Fury certainly seemed a little discombobulated by the way the Russian came out swinging from the opening bell, but the contest was decidedly under his control from the third round onwards.
The former two-time heavyweight champion, who preceded his ringwalk with a special tribute to Ricky Hatton and wore shorts honouring the British great, quickly got the measure of the shorter Makhmudov, inviting him to charge onto several uppercuts that sapped the strength from a dangerous puncher.
It’s happening.

Fury could presumably have ended a good-natured contest sooner. The latter rounds resembled an extended training camp, which was perhaps all part of Fury’s latest retirement recovery programme.
After the predictable decision was announced, Fury turned to Joshua on the front row and called on him to agree to “the fight [the fans] have all been waiting for”. Joshua took the diplomatic approach, insisting talks must take place behind closed doors and not in the glare of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium lights, although he did make sure to let Fury know what he thought of his performance.
Any showdown now between two of the UK’s most famous fighters will naturally bring with it an element of sadness, with neither man at the peak of his powers. It seems, though, that it’s a matter of time before an agreement is reached. Based on the reaction of the north London crowd, the fans’ appetite for this bout has barely diminished, even if the combatants themselves have.

All times ET.
6:01 p.m.: Joshua: “Tyson, I’ve never had a problem getting in a ring with you. I punched you out when we were kids. When you’re ready, you come and see me, and tell me your terms and conditions. I’m the boss. I’m the landlord. You work for me. Remember that.”
Fury: “Do not run from me this time. Ten years in the making — let’s f—— dance.”
6:00 p.m.: Turki Alalshikh is in the ring. “The time has come” for the announcement, he says. Fury takes the mic and thanks the fans for attending. “Next, I want to give you the fight you’ve all been waiting for: I want you, AJ, Anthony Joshua, let’s give the fight fans what they want. The battle of Britain. I, challenge you, Anthony Joshua, to fight you, next. Do you accept my challenge?”
5:56 p.m.: Fury is urging Joshua to join him in the ring, but AJ says: “No, it’s your night.” It’s probably about to become their night. First, the decision…
Fury wins by unanimous decision.
Round 12: The final round starts and finishes with an embrace between the two fighters. Makhmudov has dug deep to take this all the way. Fury will consider that an effective workout as he builds towards bigger fights to come this year, perhaps against a certain compatriot sitting in the front row…
Round 11: Fury salutes the crowd as he heads back to his corner, having given them something to cheer with another sharp combination starting with an uppercut. We’re going the distance if Makhmudov can hang in there.
Round 10: Makhmudov is clinging on, figuratively and physically. Fury breaks free with 25 seconds of the round left and lands a flurry of shots. He’s starting to cause real damage with the right hand, but Makhmudov is still standing.
Round 9: “Let’s go, let’s fight,” Fury says after Makhmudov was slow to release. To be fair, he lost his gumshield part way through the round. This is being fought to Fury’s pace now — will it go the distance?
Round 8: Makhmudov continues to try to force the issue and walks onto a second uppercut. A sharp combo rattles Makhmudov, who, for the first time, looks to be leaning away from shots.
Round 7: Well then! Makhmudov catches Fury with a left uppercut and an overhand right, then follows up with a reaching right hand. Just a reminder, perhaps, that Fury would be wise not to toy with the Russian here.
Round 6: At the halfway stage, Fury is in complete control. It’s beginning to look like he’s dragging this one out, knowing his opponent will continue to walk onto shots in the hope of a KO.

Round 5: Fury’s corner call for “patience” after another attritional round. Fury caught Makhmudov with a left hook there that Anthony Joshua at ringside filmed on his phone. A bit of research, there…?

Round 4: Fury has used his reach well to keep Makhmudov at bay, but he finds a gap in the Brit’s defence early in Round 4. Then, WHAM — there goes the swift right hand, leaving the Russian a little shaken. He’s still swinging for the fences, but at the bell, he’s left shaking his head side to side as though trying to get rid of the ringing in his ears.
Round 3: With 30 seconds of the round left, we get the first grin from Fury. Makhmudov clearly hoped to spring a surprise with an early knockout; now that Fury has figured him out, his lack of a Plan B is becoming obvious.
Round 2: Makhumdov clearly doesn’t see this going the distance. He comes in swinging like Bart Simpson twirling his arms in Lisa’s bedroom. Fury starts sussing out the attack and lands a couple of counters. He’s getting a read on the Russian.

Round 1: Fury, wearing black and blue with ‘R.I.P. Ricky’ on his belt, seems shaken by Makhmudov’s aggressive start. It looks like he has a small cut to his cheek. Nothing really to split them there.
4:54 p.m.: Makhmudov makes a slow, deliberate walk to the ring as an air-raid siren blares out. And here comes Fury, whose entrance is marked by an emotional tribute to Ricky Hatton.
4:51 p.m.: In the co-main event, Conor Benn claims a dominant decision win over Regis Prograis.
3:40 p.m.: We have a new world champion! Richard Riakporhe stops Jeamie Tshikeva to become the new BBB of C heavyweight champion. A dominant, brutal performance.
