Jordan Spieth hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2022, but remains one of the PGA Tour’s most beloved current golfers for good reason. Spieth is never not exciting … in the best of ways and the worst of ways. One round, he’ll have a death-defying shot that forces Pebble Beach to shift one of its holes, then during another round, he’ll putt left-handed from a bush.
It’s one thing to watch it; it’s another thing to experience it. At least according to those who have lived to tell the tale. Most recently, Jacob Bridgeman got a first-hand look at the Jordan Spieth Experience at the Valspar Championship and had a lot to say to Spieth’s friend and golf analyst, Smylie Kaufman.

Recently, the two ended up waiting for a flight to Atlanta together, and the Genesis Invitational winner dove into Spieth’s current play with Kaufman.

“He played with Jordan the first two days,” Kaufman explained. “And he’s like, ‘buddy, when he’s on right now, it is unbelievable. But when it starts to kind of get a little bit off, it’s almost like a second-guessing, where the wind all of a sudden feels like it’s doing more than what it should affect him.
“Sometimes, it’s just a nine iron and trust that the wind’s there. I think sometimes he gets a little bit … I don’t know if it’s in his own head, trying to do too much sometimes, trying to play every shot perfectly and have the perfect conditions, but it seems like something gets in his way a little bit. And I don’t think I can quite put my finger on it, but from what Jacob said, he plays phenomenal golf, just hits all the right shots. He said his putting from 10 feet to 30 feet’s a joke. His up and downs that he was making, he said it was hectic.

“He talked about Friday, I think he had three plugged lies, and he was just shocked he was getting plugged lies. It’s like, dude, everybody’s getting plugged lies. It’s everybody here. Sometimes, he doesn’t realize that it’s not just you.”
This season has been up-and-down for Spieth, with four top-25 finishes over seven events but not a single top ten. He’s in the hunt constantly, and yet, he hasn’t won on tour since the 2022 RBC Heritage.
According to fellow PGA Tour winners, Spieth at his best is still “unbelievable.” He just needs to keep that up over 72 holes. Easier said than done, of course. But if anyone can do the unexpected, it’s Jordan Spieth.
