STATELINE, Nevada — Tony Romo won the celebrity golf tournament three times at Edgewood Tahoe, but has struggled a bit in recent years.

He says he’s completely healthy now and prepared to return to the winner’s circle this July.

The American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament is Friday-Sunday at Edgewood.

Romo has played in the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe 13 times, winning it in 2018, 2019 and again in 2022.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS TV analyst finished as the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns. He earned four Pro Bowl selections.

Romo had a quick answer for why he has struggled a bit after winning in 2022. He finished in eighth place in 2025.

“I think it’s because I stunk at golf for a few years. That’s probably why you slowly move back,” Romo said. “I had a little bit of success here for a long run. And then little injuries, one year was the wrist. I had broke it, didn’t realize before I got here.

“But you love the tournament so much you try to play through it and everything.”

Romo said he took about a year off from golf after the wrist injury in 2020, and when he returned, he had lost some of his golfing skills

“And then kind of got off in the chipping, for sure on the chipping. Driving a little bit, too. It’s been a long road since then,” Romo said. “But I feel like this winter I kind of turned the corner where I feel comfortable enough where I can step up and hit and don’t have to take 20 practice swings and slow the group down forever. It feels more comfortable than it has in a long time.”

Romo played a couple of stops on the Korn Ferry Tour, a minor league professional golf tour, and said he learned how important putting is from his time playing with the pros.

“What you take away is you probably need to practice that more than you think,” Romo said. “And I think that’s one of the things that I feel like I’ve put a lot of time into coming here.”
