Tommy Fleetwood consistently pops up on lists of the best PGA Tour players without a title, and it’s often pointed out that he’s been a victim of some bad luck, posting some of his best rounds when others have gone really low.
But on Sunday, during the final round of the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, Fleetwood got a most fortuitous bounce coming into the par-5 7th hole.
The 34-year-old Brit pushed a 6-iron a bit right, and it looked destined to splash into the water or perhaps bounce on a wall, well out of play.
Instead, Fleetwood’s shot flew over an unwitting volunteer, who was oblivious to the rocket, then caromed off a rock wall onto the green. The ball even spun perfectly back to the cup, giving the 7-time DP World Tour winner a 22-foot eagle putt. To his credit, Fleetwood took full advantage of the opportunity.
Although he was in contention after the opening two rounds of play, Fleetwood struggled to a 76 on Saturday, knocking him out of contention. He opened the final round 14 shots behind Scottie Scheffler.
