When Victor Munoz joined Liverpool in the summer very few people thought his arrival would reveal a new role for Giorgi Mamardashvili.
The Georgian shot-stopper has acted as Alisson’s back up since his arrival last summer, having to step up on several occasions when the Brazilian has been injured.

Mamardashvili also received his first minutes of the season this week when he started Liverpool’s third round Carabao Cup game against Tottenham, a match in which the 25-year-old impressed.
There have been doubts raised over the longevity of the Georgian’s Anfield career, but summer arrival Munoz has now shed light on the ‘keepers’ importance to the squad.
Munoz reveals Mamardashvili support
Speaking to Spanish outlet Dario AS, Munoz has offered some insight into the early days of his Liverpool career.
When asked about who had helped him to settle in since his Merseyside move, the 23-year-old gave a somewhat surprising answer.

“Mac Allister is helping me a lot, as is Mamardashvili. I also get on very well with Ronald Araujo since he arrived,” Munoz revealed.
Alexis Mac Allister is a Spanish speaker, and has been a leading figure in the dressing room for several years, so it was no surprise to hear his name mentioned.
Ronald Araujo also speaks Munoz’s native tongue, and the pair will have played against each other in Spain over the last few years, so again it will come as no surprise to hear of a friendship blossoming in Merseyside.
It is Mamardashvili’s mention that was somewhat surprising.
The Georgian did play in Spain before he moved to Liverpool, but is now clearly taking on a leading role in the dressing room, something that will greatly improve his chance of succeeding Alisson when the Brazilian eventually departs.

In a season that is viewed as potentially make or break for Mamardashvili, it is pleasing to hear that he is stepping up in the dressing room and encouraging to see that the Georgian could be a leader in Iraola’s squad in the near future.
