Tony Stewart recalls a driver meeting with NASCAR around the 2013-2015 period that was the start of his eventual exit from the sport. After getting shut down by NASCAR executives on how to improve the on-track product, Stewart started making plans for retirement.
“Smoke” retired from full-time NASCAR competition at the conclusion of the 2016 season. He continued to co-own Stewart-Haas Racing until the organization ceased operations at the end of the 2024 season.
