Swansea City have appointed Notts County’s Richard Montague as their new director of football.

The Swans have had a vacancy since former sporting director Paul Watson left last October.

The Championship club interviewed several potential candidates, with the UAE Pro League’s technical director Gareth Jennings among those in the frame.

But Swansea have opted for Montague, who worked alongside head coach Luke Williams during his time at Notts County.

They led the Magpies to promotion from the National League in 2023, with Williams going on to join the Swans in January 2024.

Now he is to be reunited with Montague, who has also worked for the Football Radar analytics company as their head of football analysis.

Notts County, who are second in League Two, appointed Montague as executive director in 2019, effectively serving as director of football.

That was his first full-time job with a club, though he has been involved with Football Radar for 14 years.

Swansea will be hoping Montague can improve their recruitment after a calamitous January transfer window which prompted strong criticism for the club and its board.

A Swansea statement read: “In his new role, Richard will be responsible for overseeing all football operations and spearheading the club’s recruitment strategy.

“His extensive experience and proven track record in football make him a key addition to the Swansea City family.

“Richard’s deep understanding of data analytics and his first-hand knowledge of the football industry and operations make him the outstanding candidate for this role. We look forward to him starting his new duties at Swansea City.”
