Surprising Scottie Scheffler News Emerges During The Open Championship this Weekend originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Open Championship at Royal Portrush is heading into its final round, and Scottie Scheffler remains firmly in control. The world number one leads the field at 14-under par after a bogey-free third-round 67, earning a four-shot lead over China’s Li Haotong. With consistent putting and calm under pressure, Scheffler has set himself up perfectly for Sunday.

Behind Scheffler, the leaderboard is still packed with strong names. Matt Fitzpatrick sits at 9 under, while Tyrrell Hatton, Harris English, Chris Gotterup and local favorite Rory McIlroy are all tied at 8 under.

McIlroy, who posted a strong 5-under 66 on Saturday, acknowledged the challenge ahead: “He’s just so solid. He doesn’t make mistakes. … Whenever you’re chasing down a guy like that, it’s hard to do.”

If Scheffler holds on to win, the records will follow. He would become the 31st player in golf history to win four or more majors. He’d also be just the ninth golfer ever to win the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open Championship in his career. This would mark the second time this season that someone achieved that; McIlroy did so earlier.

Scheffler would also become the second straight player, after Xander Schauffele, to win both the PGA and The Open in the same year.

Adding to the historical weight, a win would make Scheffler the 12th consecutive first-time Open Championship winner, with Ernie Els in 2012 being the last repeat champion.

Scheffler has now won all three of his majors when leading or sharing the lead after 54 holes.
