In one of his recent X posts, The Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath has shared an update on Clement Bischoff, who has emerged as a summer target for Sunderland. The Brøndby prospect has also been on Brighton & Hove Albion’s radar, but a transfer did not materialise in winter despite a bid of around £7m from the Seagulls.
The 19-year-old midfielder is representing Denmark in the ongoing UEFA EURO U-21. Having spent the academy years with Fremad Amager, the youngster joined Brøndby in January 2022 and eventually secured a regular first-team role since the start of the 2024-25 season. He scored twice and laid on 10 more in 40 appearances across competitions, and his finesse down the left has grabbed the attention of the Black Cats.
Meanwhile, the Danish outfit are likely to accept a bid of around £5.1m for the teenager. They could have asked for more, but the contract situation of Bischoff might favour the newly promoted Premier League side in terms of striking a cut-price deal.
His current deal expires in a year, and the boys from Vestegnen would rather cash in on this summer than lose him for nothing in six months. He would be eligible to pen a pre-contract agreement, thus leaving on a Bosman upon the expiry of his Brøndby deal.
Why Sunderland Are Chasing The Young Dane
Sunderland are back in the Premier League after eight years of agony and despair. But they must bolster the squad to maintain their top-flight status, particularly after the high-profile exits of Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson. The latter scored the decisive injury-time winner in their dramatic comeback against Sheffield United in the promotion play-off final. However, his move to Brighton would leave a void on the left, even though Romaine Mundle had an impressive stint in Regis Le Bris’ 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 set-up.
Meanwhile, the Black Cats have tied Enzo Le Fee down on permanent terms. The Frenchman would be the principal figure for his flexibility in the centre of the pitch, but he is expected to occupy a central role in the absence of Bellingham. Bischoff should replace Watson as a wide midfielder, and his promises and potential could see him challenge and cover Mundle week in and week out.
Having said that, the Wearsiders must also target renowned names to find a balance between youth and experience. The relegation of all three promoted sides depicts the difference in level and standards between the Championship and Premier League football, and Sunderland, therefore, should tweak their strategy regardless of Bischoff’s arrival.
