Jeremie Frimpong has made an electric start since he joined Liverpool, and the full-back’s enthusiasm for the club’s winning mentality was clear as he reflected on another dramatic European night at Anfield.

Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid marked a fifth consecutive victory sealed with a late goal. Speaking after the match, Frimpong said: “It’s part of football, sometimes you score [in the] last minute. I’ve had a lot of last-minute [goals] in my career so far, obviously with Leverkusen. But the most important thing is that we won. I think we deserved to win. We were the better team, played really well.”

The match saw Liverpool race into a two-goal lead through Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah before a Marcos Llorente brace levelled the tie. Virgil van Dijk’s 92nd-minute header secured all three points in front of the Kop.

Frimpong was quick to dismiss any notion that these late wins are down to fortune. “Exactly. In a match you never know when you’re going to score. Of course in football you’d like to score earlier but sometimes it doesn’t work like that. Like I said, it’s part of football. Sometimes you score late, sometimes you score early.”

His words underline a theme that has defined Liverpool’s start to the season: resilience combined with quality in the crucial moments.

Frimpong praised the growing influence of his close friend Florian Wirtz, highlighting their link-up play. “He’s just getting started. Obviously I’ve been with him for four years in Leverkusen, so I know what he can do. I’m seeing that. It’s coming. There’s a lot more to see from him.”

The Dutchman summed up his excitement at being part of this Liverpool side. “This is why I came to Liverpool. Liverpool is a winning team, they know how to win trophies and that’s what I want to do.”

Frimpong’s words capture the sense of belief around Anfield right now. Results have come late, but they have come consistently, and that is what matters most as this new-look Liverpool continues to grow into the season.
