The Pittsburgh Steelers like what they’ve seen from general manager Omar Khan. The team announced a three-year extension with Khan on Thursday that will keep him in town through the 2028 NFL season.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced. In a statement, Khan expressed optimism about the team’s outlook in 2025 and beyond.

“I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the City of Pittsburgh and our great fans.”

Khan, a long-time Steelers employee, was originally hired by the team in 2001. He worked his way up through the organization, eventually becoming its general manager ahead of the 2022 NFL season. Since then, the Steelers have compiled a 29-22 record, making two playoff appearances.

While the team has exceeded expectations under Khan in the regular season, the playoffs remain an issue. The Steelers have yet to win a playoff game under Khan’s guidance, typically due to being exposed on offense.

Khan attempted to fix that this offseason, bringing in Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith in separate deals. Those players have a combined 13 Pro Bowl appearances between them.

He also brought in seven-time Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey to shore up an already solid defense.

While those additions should help, there’s still one major move Khan has yet to sort out. Star pass rusher T.J. Watt is seeking a new contract and did not appear at mandatory minicamp due to the situation. The Steelers have maintained they are focused on signing Watt, and are reportedly not entertaining trades for the seven-time Pro Bowler.

Assuming cooler heads prevail and both sides can come to an agreement, Khan should have the Steelers set up to contend in the AFC North in 2025. It won’t be an easy task, as the division is loaded with talent, but that hasn’t stopped the Steelers from overachieving the last couple seasons.
