The St. Xavier High School golf team is off to a solid start in the quest for its first state championship in nine years.
The Tigers carded a score of 2-over-par 290 on Friday in the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Championships at Bowling Green Country Club.
St. X holds a two-shot lead over Madison Central (292), which has won three straight state titles. McCracken County (299) is third and Christian Academy (301) fourth entering Saturday’s second and final round, which will tee off at 9 a.m. EDT.
McCracken County senior Landon Hunt, a Murray State commit, leads the chase for the individual title after shooting a 4-under 68.
South Oldham senior Colton Woosley is in second place with a 69, and there’s a three-way tie for third at 70 involving Christian Academy senior Will Judd, Henry Clay junior Carson Nicholas and St. X junior Luc Kelty.
Eastern senior Jacob Rafferty is tied for 12th after a 74.
Joining Kelty in St. X’s top four scores Friday were senior Will Stuart (71), junior Brody Alexander (72) and sophomore Finn Johnson (77).
St. X won the last of its record 21 state titles in 2016.
