Sophia Schubert’s Closing Birdie Sets Up Loaded LPGA Sunday

Sophia Schubert was three shots behind Arpichaya Yubol after making bogey at the 14th hole Saturday afternoon.

Four holes later, they were tied.

Schubert birdied Nos. 16 and 18 to complete a third-round 67 and reach 16-under 200 at The Standard Portland Classic. Yubol, who briefly built her lead to three with a birdie at No. 11, made her only bogey of the day at the 15th and settled for a 68.

That late swing transformed Sunday at Columbia Edgewater Country Club from another chase of Yubol into something far more interesting.

Schubert and Yubol will begin the final round tied for the lead, each pursuing her first LPGA Tour victory. Walking alongside them will be World No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul, a nine-time winner who sits just two shots back after producing a 67 without anything close to her best ball-striking.

Narin An is three behind following a 66. Six more players are tied for fifth at 12 under, leaving 10 players within four shots of the lead on a course that yielded a Saturday scoring average of 70.26.

There is room for this final round to move quickly. Saturday already proved it.

Schubert Changes the Ending

Yubol had command of the tournament through much of the back nine. She opened with four birdies in her first 10 holes, added another at the 11th and reached 17 under.

Schubert stayed close without forcing the issue. Even after bogeys at Nos. 4 and 14 interrupted her progress, she found the two birdies that changed the complexion of the tournament.

At the par-4 18th, she hit her approach close and converted the uphill putt to pull even with Yubol.

“We were kind of doing the same thing we were doing all day: staying patient, just trying to hit fairways and greens, not really thinking about it and not really trying to press,” Schubert said. “It just worked out.”

The closing birdie was an appropriate finish to a week built on improved putting. Schubert has needed 84 putts through three rounds and has converted enough chances to complement some of the field’s best approach play. She has hit 45 of 54 greens in regulation.

“My putting,” Schubert said when asked what had clicked. “That’s what I’ve been waiting for all year honestly.”

Schubert has been here before, although not recently. Her best LPGA Tour finish remains a runner-up showing at the 2022 Amundi Evian Championship. She spent time on the Epson Tour last season, an experience she believes helped restore the competitive confidence required for another Sunday opportunity.

She will need all of it now.

Yubol Is No Longer New to Sundays

Yubol is still seeking her first LPGA Tour win, but Sunday contention has become increasingly familiar.

The 24-year-old finished alone in second at the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba in May, then posted another runner-up finish at the ShopRite LPGA Classic later that month. She has twice experienced the final-round tension of being close without yet discovering what it feels like to finish the job.

Portland offers another chance, and her game has been remarkably steady through 54 holes.

Yubol has hit 38 of 42 fairways, an accuracy rate of just over 90%. She has needed only 76 putts and has not recorded a three-putt. Her 68 Saturday included five birdies and one bogey.

She also appeared comfortable carrying the lead, even with friends following her and the leaderboard tightening around her.

“I didn’t focus on any score that much, but I just do my best on my game,” Yubol said. “You cannot just stay on your score. You have to keep moving up.”

She will play alongside Schubert for the second consecutive day. The third member of the group adds another layer to Yubol’s Sunday.

Yubol and Thitikul played junior golf together in Thailand and have practiced together as professionals, but Sunday will mark their first LPGA Tour round together.

“She’s kind of like my sister,” Yubol said.

That familiarity may offer some comfort. It will not make Thitikul any less dangerous.

Thitikul Enters With Nothing to Protect

Thitikul’s third round was messy by her standards and impressive by almost anyone else’s.

She hit only 10 greens in regulation, made three bogeys and three-putted the ninth. She also recorded eight birdies and needed just 25 putts to salvage a 5-under 67.

Thitikul has now made a field-leading 19 birdies through three rounds. Her ability to keep creating opportunities, even on a day when her iron play slipped, is what makes the two-shot margin feel so small.

Schubert and Yubol will carry the emotional weight of trying to win for the first time. Thitikul already owns nine LPGA Tour titles and begins Sunday in the more aggressive position of having ground to make up.

“We’re playing golf because we love to be in contention,” Thitikul said. “We love chasing the trophy.”

That chase begins immediately. Columbia Edgewater has four reachable par 5s, and the final group cannot expect 16 under to be enough without adding to it.

Sunday Could Become a Sprint

The final threesome of Schubert, Yubol and Thitikul is scheduled to tee off at 9:25 a.m. Pacific.

An will begin 11 minutes earlier at 13 under alongside Jiwon Jeon and Minami Katsu, both at 12 under. Chella Choi, Chanettee Wannasaen, Manon De Roey and Erika Hara also share fifth.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for morning clouds followed by gradual clearing, a high near 82 and light north-northwest wind. Nothing in that outlook suggests Columbia Edgewater will suddenly become defensive.

That places an important demand on the leaders. Patience will matter, but passive golf probably will not hold up.

Yubol has already learned twice this season how thin the difference can be between contending and winning. Schubert has waited four years to return to an LPGA Sunday this promising. Thitikul has the résumé, the birdie production and the freedom to chase.

Schubert’s final putt Saturday made them start together. Sunday will decide whether that closing birdie opened the door to her first LPGA Tour victory or simply invited one of the strongest players in the world into the conversation.
