‘Simplified’ yellow card suspension rule to be introduced for 2025/26 season in Ligue 1

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has announced a key change to disciplinary regulations in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 starting from the 2025/26 season.

From next season, players will be automatically suspended after accumulating five yellow cards—regardless of how many matches they’ve played. The reform replaces the current rule that sees players suspended after three bookings in a ten-game window.

The decision comes as a result of the LFP’s disciplinary working group, established earlier this year by the league’s Board of Directors in conjunction with Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 representatives. Inspired by practices across other major European leagues, the new system is designed to simplify the accumulation process and improve clarity for players, clubs, and fans alike.

The updated rule – officially adopted by the LFP on the 3rd June – will apply across all domestic competitions, including the Coupe de France and the Trophée des Champions. As before, all card counts will be reset at the end of each season.Previously, three yellow cards in ten matches would be cause for a one-match suspension, but Ligue 1 will now follow most other major European leagues in the new five-card rule, notably the Premier League.GFFN | George Boxall
