Mourinho: “Perhaps I’m only missed in Italy because nobody else has won the Champions League”

Speaking a few days before Fenerbahce begin their preseason, former Roma manager José Mourinho appeared at the practice round for the F1 British Grand Prix in Silverstone.

Appearing on Sky Sports, the Special One touched on various topics — from his former player and new Inter boss Cristian Chivu, to Italian football, and the tragic passing of fellow Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota.

“I’m doing well and enjoying my last few days of my holiday. Unfortunately, I won’t be here for the race on Sunday since the season is about to begin and I’ll be traveling to Istanbul,” explained Mourinho.

“Regarding (Diogo) Jota, we always say nice things when someone passes, but he really was a great guy. A strong player—someone who didn’t seek the spotlight or attention.”

He continued, “One day maybe we’ll understand why these things happen, but right now, there’s no explanation.”

After two stints in Serie A with Inter and Roma, whom he led to a Conference League title, Mourinho was asked about a future return to the league.

“Perhaps the only reason I’m missed in Italy is because nobody there won the Champions League since me,” remarked Mourinho. “Unfortunately, it’s true.”

Finally, He also shared his thoughts on Inter’s decision to appoint Cristian Chivu, one of his former players.

“He’s one of my kids. He learned a lot from me, but now he’s becoming his own man,” stated Mou.

“Being a great player and being a great coach are two different things. I hope things go well for him — he’s brave and has personality.

He added, “The only thing I hope is that he doesn’t win the Treble! He can win the Champions League, the league, and the Coppa Italia — just not all three at once.”

Mourinho’s remarks mixed reflection, humor, and his trademark sharp edge, as he prepares to begin his next campaign on the bench in Turkey.
