Sergio Garcia wants to play on the European Ryder Cup team in two months.
No European has accumulated more Ryder Cup points than Garcia, who boasts a 25-13-7 record with 28.5 points to boot in 10 appearances. When he’s playing well, the Spaniard is an invaluable asset to the European squad.
Back in his home country for LIV Golf Andalucia at Valderrama, Garcia was asked early and often about his Ryder Cup chances. He sits 174th on the points list, meaning he would need a captain’s pick to make the team at Bethpage Black in late September. Garcia recently caught up with European captain Luke Donald over dinner, and there was plenty of Ryder Cup talk between the duo.
“I had a good conversation with Luke last week, and we both know what we want. The only thing I can do is keep working hard, keep building my confidence up, and if I’m able to do that, then it should be fine,” Garcia said. “We’ll see.”
“The pick is going to be up to him,” he continued. “Up to me is going to be the way I play. Obviously, yeah, if I play well, I think I have a good opportunity, a good chance of being picked. If I don’t, then it’ll depend a little bit on where I stand or how things are going.”
Play will likely determine Sergio Garcia’s chances
Garcia played on the DP World Tour last week, missing the cut at the BMW International Open in Germany. This week, he looks to build on a strong LIV season, where he has one victory in Hong Kong and is fifth in the season standings.
But the Ryder Cup is not LIV Golf, and Garcia acknowledges he needs to play better. In Garcia, Donald faces the ultimate conundrum of relying on aging legends versus allowing the new wave of younger talent to create their own legacies.
For Garcia, he’s holding on to hope he has one last run in him.
“We’ll see. Still early,” Garcia said.
